Launching: Heartsong Project: Who I Am, My Passion, My Vision & Intentions

January 21, 2012

As we’re building out human-centered next-gen profiles for the Collaboratory, we wanted an intimate and creative way for people to get to know each other.

Enter: the Heartsong Project.

(thanks lauren higgins for bringing up the term “heartsong” on our brainstorm call.)

The idea is pretty simple and straightforward:

Record a 1-3 minute video of you describing your heartsong.

What’s a Heartsong?

This is your personal “tune.”

Who are you?

What passion drives your actions?

What makes your heart sing?

Everyone has beautiful visions inside of themselves, and as we bring those to the surface and share them with each other, the likelihood of them becoming real amplifies.

Let’s manifest!

The above is a sample I made this morning. It took me a few hours total. I’m on an iMac. I recorded in photobooth and edited in iMovie.

I also purchased the domain “heartsongproject.cc”

I’d like this to be the 2nd project of Open Foresight.

(Open Foresight is a series of models and methodologies we’re developing for co-creative visions of the future. It combines techniques from futures studies together with design and media production. The first prototype was the Future of Facebook video series. The Heartsong Project is about developing personal foresight – understanding your own deep desires and aims and clarifying them. This is the first step to developing plans of action towards achieving them.)

I don’t have the bandwidth to develop out the website at the moment, but would be happy to do a wireframe or mockup with ideas for anyone who would like to run with it. (we can co-create it in the Collaboratory!)

We’re already creating our Heartsongs and uploading them to youtube.

All content we create for Open Foresight projects is being licensed Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (cc by-SA 3.0), meaning we’re making it available to be reused, remixed, and built upon by others.

Can’t wait to hear your heartsongs!!!

I don’t use videos, but the resource page on ‘Economics for Humanity’ is my collection of videos and articles about capitalism for people and planet under a variety of brands.

do you have a webcam? i could help you record a heartsong video.

Yep, super nice. Lauren and a few others of us started a similar project but it died off in the pre-Contact hubbub.

I’m glad that you took the initiative. This is exactly the sort of thing that we need to get to know each other. No big production, just a few hours fun cut at the essence of who we are. Any more time and we’ll be letting our minds drive, not our hearts.

I absolutely love this. Let me know where you end up. Am also in midst of starting a Junto relating specifically to passion projects and self development, so am watching all your great thinking with huge interest.

Vanessa, I love this project! I have written a life-building workbook called, “Make A Life”, that I think connects well with this amazing project of yours. In working in 25 countries, then returning back to Nashville, I discovered that over 90% of the people I asked did not have a life mission statement or a life strategy. Most people don’t know who they are, what they wake up for, what they want to do before they are done, where they want to go before they are gone, or how to get there. Therefore, I wrote this workbook to help people live examined and intentional lives that lead to self-discovery and answers to these life questions. Your Heartsong Project would be an awesome second step for those who complete the Make A Life material. Once they know who they are, what they want to do with their lives, and where they want to go, they could do a video to express it. It’s brilliant – thanks!

      i love you too, darling!

when are you going to come play in our collaboratory??

I said to Vanessa elsewhere that I hope everyone in her massive networks does one of these. But I hope everyone uses this frame filled with face format. It’s the eye contact that makes this work so well! It will be a wonderful compendium of truly inspired inspiring souls. Faces make all the difference. Faces fire our mirror neurons. Faces make us feel the connection. Eyes light up our souls. Thanks Vanessa!

I teach teamwork for a living. I teach that authentic disclosure is essential, and at the root of genuine team greatness. (I learn this from the McCarthy’s, see the Core Commitments @ http://www.liveingreatness.com/the-core-protocols/the-core-commitments.html.)

This example turns disclosure into an art form in my view. Text, pix, videos, audio and related elements conspire to send a disclosure package that leverages all the media available online … in service to the receiver. “I commit to engage when present; and to know and disclose what I want, what I think and what I feel.” This does that, online no less. WOW.

“This example turns disclosure into an art form in my view”

i feel that as we embrace and master the tools of production (both online media communications, and our own personal agency in the physical world), i think we’ll notice that life is very much performative art.

v inspiring. The heartsong meme reached my radar thanks to Stepanek’s “Choice lesson”. The creative genius kid wrote a whole book of poems called “Heartsongs”. He’s a real superhero.

Keep expanding your heart space and I’ll see you on the other side.

Here are some snippets from my favorite heartsongs.
