accel

I’ve been working on a fascinating research project exploring the models and emerging industry verticals of startup accelerators around the world. The standard formula for accelerators is as follows: you bring your entrepreneurial spirit and an idea, and in exchange for an equity stake in your nascent company, you receive some seed capital and a 3 month program providing mentorship, training, advice and resources to help you build your business. The program ends in an Investor Demo Day, where you get a chance to gain the interest of VC and angel investors.

I’ll post something with a synthesis of my thinking around these alternate avenues to value creation soon. In the meantime, I wanted to share the roundup of some of the top tech-focused accelerators, as well as a list of some emerging industry verticals.

Thanks to those in the Next Edge community & on Quora who helped compile this info!

Enjoy!

What are some useful playdecks for sparking creativity and innovation?

That was this week’s question that went out on twitter, and below are some of your responses.

The number of decks out there is large, so I decided to curate this list based on whether there’s a full free version available online, or at the least a nice sample deck to get you started. So below are 21 tools, ranging from general design process principles to cards on game dynamics, facilitation methods, and long-range futures thinking. Under the descriptions, which are excerpted from the playdeck websites, are links to their free downloads. Below that are another 39 decks, toolkits and further resource lists for creative and innovative thinking.

Thanks to all who helped compile this.. Did we miss any?

I’ve been hunting around for examples of future maps and graphics, hoping to be inspired by designs combining great content and form.  Thanks to your responses on twitter and facebook, here are a handful of images to stimulate your thinking about where we’re headed next!

A few weeks back I put my intention out to open a Beacon Collaboratory, or what I called in the blog post a “Superhero School.” As I look around me, I’m seeing a pattern of convergence towards these kinds of live/work/play spaces. As “living labs,” these spaces bring together elements of a tech incubator, an R&D facility, a hackerspace/fablab, a sustainability demonstration site, and it’s all tied to place – with the projects / prototypes / experiments being done there carried out and implemented in the local area, stimulating the economy, creating jobs, and building resilient communities throughout the area and the region.

I’ve been over to the dream property four times now, and each time I go it seems I have a clearer sense of how the whole thing could work.
.
I can see it as being an innovation hub and retreat center, wrapped in a creative learning culture. Just 90 minutes by train from NYC, a welcome change of scenery for Silicon Alley. Continue reading →

I’ve always been fascinated with the workings of my own mind, and by human nature in general. With a background doing undergraduate work in Psychology, and graduate work in Social and Critical Theory, I’ve spent long hours contemplating individual motivations as well as group dynamics and the potential for (the much sought after, but often elusive) collective intelligence. If we want to determine what it takes to better function as groups, both in physical proximity and across distributed environments, I think it’s important to understand our own internal landscapes and how our strengths are best amplified in the presence of others with complimentary talents.

Below is a list of online assessments that are useful in becoming more aware of one’s strengths, gifts and temperaments. I’ve pasted excerpts of my own results below, to give a sense of how the assessments are formatted. Continue reading →

Mapping the Identity Management Landscape: 29 Providers

I’m just beginning to dive into a new research area around Identity and Access Management (IAM) in the enterprise, and am brushing up on the main challenges, opportunities and contenders in the space. The premise around IAM seems simple enough – make sure people are who they say they are, and give them access to the appropriate data and services they need. This area is particularly interesting to me because I see the future of work and collaboration generally becoming a more non-hierarchical, self-organizing and fluid thing, where ad-hoc relationships are formed for temporary projects and then dissolved. Individuals will need to quickly be authenticated, assigned roles, given access to sensitive information, monitored, and then deprovisioned. Ideally, the majority of this process would be automated. For the individual in this scenario, who would most likely be logging in to a multitude of web-based applications and accounts across a range of personal devices, a federated identity solution would be in order. And all of this would also require security, compliance and trust solutions for the cloud, standards such as SAML and OAuth to accelerate integration, as well as standards for auditing and reporting.

These seem to essentially be the main challenges being faced now in the enterprise, so I’m curious to find out how providers stack up. Continue reading →

I’ll be giving a presentation on ‘the future of money’ in a few months, and am trying to wrap my head around all the emerging disruptive tools and services that are shaking up the financial industry. I plan to do a few posts covering these areas, and hope we can have some interesting discussion about what it means and where we’re going. In the meantime, here’s a general resource of social lending platforms/marketplaces across the globe. If you’re aware of any I’ve missed, please let me know! Thanks.

Social Lending

Social Lending, or peer-to-peer lending, essentially brings individuals together to lend and borrow money directly from each other, cutting out the middle man (the bank). Borrowers are able to get low cost loans, lenders are able to get great returns while helping their fellow man, and both parties win. Continue reading →

I hope this post will be a handy reference guide, especially for those teachers new to social media technologies and how to integrate them into the classroom. This resource is by no means exhaustive, but it’s a good starting point for finding the information and people that will help you make the transition into a ’21st century learning environment’. I intend for this to be a wikipost (I will update resources as they are shared with me by others), so feel free to bookmark the page and check in periodically for new material. Enjoy.
