The culture hacking story I want to share with you is almost ten years old now. Back then I was a Ph.D. student in Computer Science with a deep interest in social software. I was posting to my blog daily, and building a reputation as a thinker in the field. Continue reading →

I’ve been curious lately about what leadership means… or about what people think leadership means these days. Specifically in terms of the new world of work, of self-organizing systems, of self-interested autonomous agents collaborating towards common goals.

What are the traits and characteristics of authentic leaders? How does their behavior influence/inspire others?

I sent out a tweet yesterday to see what you had to say on the topic. Thanks to all who responded!

I was over on Seb Paquet’s Emergent Cities blog this morning, and rereading his inaugural post from about a year ago – What are Emergent Cities? He makes the claim that “we’re about to see the emergence of a new way of conducting innovation that operates quasi-independently of the current money system,” and that the chief requirements to make this happen are things like “time, imagination, knowledge, initiative and trust, with money moving from primary to secondary concern.”

The whole post is worth reading, as I think he really nailed many of the elements that need to be in place for a new economy to emerge, namely the “social DNA” piece. (where ‘social DNA’ forms the foundation for culture)

The barriers to the “new economy” aren’t so much technology hurdles, they’re mental, emotional, and behavioral ones. (highly shaped and constructed via LANGUAGE. more on this in upcoming posts.)

We discussed the concept of “culture technology” a few weeks ago, and this is exactly it. Continue reading →

I’ve just returned from a two-day workshop sponsored by Agile Boston called The Core Protocols BOOTCAMP. The purpose was to go through an immersive experiential learning process to understand the fundamental mechanics and dynamics of forming GREAT TEAMS. Specifics included:
  • Results-oriented behaviors
  • How to enter a state of shared vision with a team and stay there
  • How to create trust on a team
  • How to stay rational and healthy
  • How to make team decisions effectively
  • How to move quickly and with high quality towards the team’s goals

The course was facilitated by an amazing couple, Jim and Michele McCarthy, authors of the book Software For Your Head.

My Takeaways

The outcome of the past two days is that my focus has been sharpened and honed on some critical components for forming extraordinary teams that can SHIP, scaling, and ultimately impacting epic cultural transformation.

The learning community in which I participate has actually been noodling over this inquiry for several months now, framed something like:

If we were to form a ‘next-gen Agency’ that utilizes swarm intelligence to build solutions, what is the most rapid and elegant way to:

1. Form a team.
2. Envision a product.
3. Agree on how it would be made.
4. Design and build it.

Turns out this is the exact simulation we ran through at BootCamp. Continue reading →

How Will We Collaborate if We Can’t Trust Each Other?

A few years ago, I had a big snowcrash moment about the power of networks and the web, envisioning the amazing potential that could be unleashed if we could just build our networks and weave them all together.

Fast forward 18 months or so, and I find myself embedded within overlapping networks of networks…. and yet I still don’t see the magic happening that had appeared so clearly in my mind.

What’s the deal?

I chuckle now looking back at my own starry-eyed naivete, as if it were enough to just be connected. I’m reminded of something Stowe Boyd said when I interviewed him for the Future of Facebook Project:

There’s no natural reason that we’re all gonna come together and sing kumbaya just because we’re using the same social tools.

So, yeah. It’s not the technology, it’s about us. Continue reading →

I’ve always been fascinated with the workings of my own mind, and by human nature in general. With a background doing undergraduate work in Psychology, and graduate work in Social and Critical Theory, I’ve spent long hours contemplating individual motivations as well as group dynamics and the potential for (the much sought after, but often elusive) collective intelligence. If we want to determine what it takes to better function as groups, both in physical proximity and across distributed environments, I think it’s important to understand our own internal landscapes and how our strengths are best amplified in the presence of others with complimentary talents.

Below is a list of online assessments that are useful in becoming more aware of one’s strengths, gifts and temperaments. I’ve pasted excerpts of my own results below, to give a sense of how the assessments are formatted. Continue reading →

I’m in the middle of taking a course on Virtual Learning Environments (syllabus here), and reading a few chapters from Adaptive Software Development by Highsmith. It approaches the team-building and collaboration process from the perspective of complex adaptive systems theory, and contains some interesting insights in evolutionary development and creating environments where emergence can occur. I’ve created a summary of a chapter that I’d like to share, as I think it can be valuable for many of us, and specifically for the community of practitioners around the junto concept.

Collaboration is an act of shared creation or discovery. (schrage89) Continue reading →

[This article is crossposted from Jorge Jaime‘s blog, in response to my video post a few weeks back about “The Conversation.” I recorded an hour long chat on skype with Scott Lewis (@jazzmann91), broken down into 5 minute clips, in which we discussed the concept behind Junto. Namely, it is a conversation platform we are inspiring to be built around the intention of creating a respectful space where people can engage in generative dialogue and come to a place of understanding and shared meaning. Scott and I discussed what that looks like, and what kind of core values people may embrace in order to have meaningful, productive conversations that lead to positive action. In the comments section of that post, Jorge suggested someone break down the content of the discussion so that others could learn from it. I suggested he do it. He did. And here it is below! Very thorough breakdown, thank you Jorge. Original post here.]

A week ago Venessa Miemis shared a conversation where she spoke with @jazzmann91. In that conversation they talked about how to have The Conversation and some key points that we needed to take into consideration while participating in ‘The Conversation’. I suggested that it will be good to have all of the points treated there organized into a post so that we could go back and read when we were about to participate in ‘The Conversation.’

‘The Conversation’ is a debate where people discuss ideas around a topic, problem or area and try to make an impact and change the reality of that particular theme. Here’s the post that I hope will help us create a ecosystem for collaboration and will help us develop ideas a bit further.

The Internet is the ultimate human communication tool, yet communication needs certain guidelines to be really effective. In international business the cultural differences are studied in detail in the negotiation workshops. This is because communication is key to build open and honest relationships. In fact that is one of the core values of Zappos: “Build honest & open relationships with communication”.

The power of the web could be enhanced if communication could be made easy. The web is a way to accelerate serendipity, people from around the world will gather together and collaborate, something that was impossible some years go. This on-line social gatherings could help us form tribes of people willing to make a change. Take for example the myriad of collaboration tools created to help Haiti where people from different countries gathered and made projects work in days.

We’ve given a tool that can help us drive change faster. The Internet if used with the right purpose can help people gather and work towards a shared higher purpose. But for this awesomeness to happen we need to nurture and create long term trust relationships. The guidelines in this post were conceived so collaboration could flow.

These guidelines are often thought as obvious and you’ll probably think all of these points are, but it’s good to have it written down as a reference point in case we forget them. The human mind gets distracted or carried away easily and having guidelines could help reshape the way we think and in this case collaborate. Continue reading →

6 Tips for Open Collaboration

[This is a crosspost from Alpha Lo’s blog, Open Collaboration. Though he had a much catchier title for the post (“What I Learned From Venessa Miemis” – ha), I thought he did a great job listing some of the attitudes and behaviors helpful when trying to extend oneself, collaborate, and evolve. Alpha’s doing some amazing work in creating gift circles on the west coast. Check out the original post and comments here.]

I got on Twitter around November last year and started following the twitterings of a whole bunch of folk. I discovered a woman named Venessa Miemis and her blog www.emergentbydesign.com which was about systems theory, social media, networks, & community. They were very thoughtful posts in the blog that intrigued me quite a bit. And what was really interesting about this blog was that around that time at the end of 2009 there started being a huge amount of comments posted at the end of blog entries. Quite a number of the blog entries had an insane amount comments – well over the 100 mark. Reading through them took a lot longer than just reading the blog itself. And they were a wealth of material. Venessa had helped facilitate a whole community through her blog and tweets. Continue reading →

I was recently invited by Stowe Boyd to get out from behind the blog and participate in my first public speaking engagement. (ahhhh!)  He organized a conference here in NYC, Social Business Edge, which brought together a lot of voices “developing an operating manual for 21st century business.” It was kind of surreal to be in the company of many people whose work I follow, like Jamais Cascio and John Hagel, and actually getting to talk to them. (turns out they’re just people too! shhhhh). So, here is my big breakout video. You can watch everyone’s talks here.

p.s. thanks Stowe, for the very nice intro 🙂

thanks Michael for inspiring the quote –> “Technology is the tool, not the builder. We are the builders.”
