13 Books on the Future of Money & New Economy

I tapped the twittersphere the other day for the best books on the ‘future of money’ and the new/emerging economy & infrastructures. Here’s what you came up with. Attribution below each book. Other suggestions welcome! I’m getting ready for a deep dive into this content area this fall, and appreciate all the guidance you can provide!

Random House Press Release: A brilliantly clear-sighted analysis of how on-going money innovations in dozens of countries around the world are proving that they can resolve key societal problems such as: jobless growth, community breakdown,  the economic consequences of an aging society, the conflict between short-term financial thinking and long-term sustainability, and monetary instability itself. This book provides pragmatic solutions to each one of these issues. Continue reading

Future of Facebook Project Launch on CNN.com

Tags

It’s not every day I can say our little project was featured on CNN.com, so here’s us sharing our victory. 🙂

For those that are regular readers, you know that at the beginning of this year my friend Alvis and I decided to do a forward-focused video project about the future of facebook. We’ve been busy since then doing interviews, transcribing, writing scripts, and building the project. Below is the article that just launched on CNN’s Global Public Square yesterday. Huge thanks to our creative team – Shane Valcich for the video work, Erica Glasier for imagery, and Mark Plattner for designing the futureoffacebook.com web site. Please help us spread the word about the project, and let us know what you think of the first focus video – Future of Facebook: Economy. Continue reading

Share or Die

this post is a contribution i made to Shareable magazine’s new ebook – Share or Die. hope you enjoy my story.

It’s October 2010, and I’m reclined in an all expenses paid seat in business class on a flight to Berlin. I’m going there for two weeks to collaborate on a video project with a couple of artists I met online, then flying to Amsterdam to present the video to a room full of bankers at the largest financial services conference on the planet. I’m not a media producer, nor do I work in the financial industry. All I can think to myself is “How the hell did I get here?” Continue reading

Online Detox from the Baltic Coast

Tags

I’ve just spent the past few days unplugged and invigorated by the simplicity of just Being. Apparently it required me to travel to the Baltic Coast of Latvia to make this happen. In this little wooden house, with no electricity, no running water, and certainly no wifi, I remembered what it means to be at peace. It took a day to overcome the nervous twitch in my hand, antsy to impulsively check email and twitter on the iphone.

How could I possibly survive without knowing what was happening at that very moment?

How could I sustain my community if I wasn’t tweeting, posting, or commenting at least every few hours?

Resistance was futile – there was no choice but to actually be present in physical reality. Continue reading
